UK: Urban Aquaponics in London

An aquaponic farm will soon take up residence in an old London warehouse. Developed by GrowUp Urban Farms, the farm will be capable of growing 20,000 kg of salad and 4,000 kg of fish per year. Aquaponics combines fish farming with hydroponics, and by using vertical growing techniques, GrowUp Urban Farms will maximise its yield per square metre, a necessity in cities where real estate is so expensive. All the produce will be grown from seed, and pesticides won’t be used because they would make the fish sick. Instead, natural predators are introduced. “By taking over an existing building, we were more able to customise the growing environment than if we had built a new greenhouse,” says Kate Hofman, CEO of GrowUp Urban Farms, who hopes the model will be easy to replicate across the UK.
