UK: First Fully Automated Glasshouses

The UK’s first fully automated glasshouse herb growing facility has opened in West Sussex. This £3m investment by the Langmead Group provides year-round herbs for UK supermarkets at a rate of five million pots a year. The unique automatic potting, sowing and growing system can run 24 hours a day and requires minimal human input. The 1.2-ha site grows potted basil, parsley, mint, thyme and chives for retailers. The glasshouse is heated by a sustainable biomass fuel system and uses a reservoir instead of tap water. The Langmead Group is also carrying out market-leading research at the site, including a major trial, in conjunction with the University of Nottingham, on lighting technologies that provide optimal conditions for plant growth and disease prevention.
