Maximum Yield Announces the 2013 Wholesale Rep of the Year Winner

Congratulations to Travis Miles of Hydrofam for being voted 2013’s Wholesale Sales Rep of the Year

Name: Travis Miles
Age: 31
Position: Hydrofarm Territory Manager, Northeast
Started working for Hydrofarm: September 2006

What does your job entail? I work with Hydrofarm retail accounts in the Northeast region, and do my best to educate them about how our products will work for them and their customers. I also work closely with our vendors.

What’s your favorite part of your job? Definitely the interesting people I encounter. I really appreciate being able to interact with so many different personalities on a daily basis. I’m not the type of person who could do the exact same thing day after day, so I’m grateful that the job brings different challenges and surprises and the opportunity to continue to learn.

How would you describe your work ethic and style? I’m ambitious about selling Hydrofarm products, but my approach with customers changes depending on their needs and personalities. I find that a one-size-fits-all approach just isn’t me. I also like being part of a team, and a lot of what I do wouldn’t happen without our Customer Service Representative Jake Kopenhaver back in the Philadelphia Hydrofarm office.

What makes you good at your job? When I started at Hydrofarm East, I learned that listening is more important than talking. I try hard to pay attention to what our clients need as well as making the extra effort to help them improve their businesses. I also attribute a lot of my success to the great staff that Kathy Giovannelli, Hydrofarm’s Eastern Sales Manager, has assembled and trained. You can have great products and a great message to deliver, but if you don’t have a good support team to back it up, you won’t necessarily succeed.

How did you come to work for Hydrofarm? I’m originally from Colchester, Vermont, and I learned a lot about gardening while working for Claussen’s Florist and Greenhouse there. I gained a lot of knowledge about both plants and consumers. After graduating from the University of New Hampshire, I followed my future wife to Philadelphia, where I discovered Hydrofarm. I spent the first two years there training under Kathy Giovannelli and learning the ins and outs of the indoor gardening business. I moved back to New England in March of 2012 to become Northeast Territory Manager, and live with my wife in the suburbs of Boston.

How do you spend your spare time? I’m a newlywed, and I enjoy spending as much time as possible with my wife, enjoying and exploring New England.
