CAN: Fruit Juice Axed from Canada’s Food Guide?

Health Canada may be changing its daily recommendations surrounding juice. The Canadian Medical Association Journal recently reported that the director of the Office of Nutrition Policy and Promotion, Dr. Hasan Hutchinson, hinted at the future changes during a recent obesity summit. The current Food Guide recommends adult Canadians consume between 7-10 servings of fruit and vegetables a day, depending on their age and gender. It is recommended that children and teens consume between 4-8 servings a day. According to the current guide, half a cup of 100% juice is the equivalent of a single serving of fruit, but juice has been on the radar of nutritionists, doctors and parents for years over concerns about the amount of sugar it contains. Health Canada notes that it considers the “scientific underpinning” of Canada’s Food Guide on an ongoing basis to determine if updates are appropriate. (Source: ctvnews.ca)
