AUS: Greenhouse Gets a Financial Boost

An herb farm in Clyde, a suburb of Sydney, Australia, will receive a $430,000 interest-free loan from the Coles Nurture Fund to build a state-of-the-art hydroponic greenhouse. Australian Fresh Leaf Herbs’ new greenhouse will enable the garnish producer and distributor to increase its productivity by up to 500%. The business was founded by business partners Jan Vydra and William Pham in 2008 and has grown significantly over the past seven years. In 2009, Australian Fresh Leaf Herbs started trialling hydroponic production methods and recently began experimenting with cloud technology, which integrates business processes into one central online business system. “We’re combining cloud technology we have built with hydroponic growing methods from the Netherlands to produce more product with less input,” says Jan. Due to be completed in March, the new greenhouse will feature Dutch-designed rolling benches, which use 85% of available space compared to grow beds that often only use about 60%.
