AUS: Craft Beer Brewers Tap into Melons

Watermelon lovers will soon have an interesting new way to enjoy the fruit. A Melbourne micro-brewery has developed a German-style wheat beer, which features watermelon as the star ingredient. Owner Josh Uljans says many of the melons needed for the craft brew will be sourced from the Northern Territory. “We put around 200 kg of watermelon in each batch, so we need a fairly reasonable and steady supply,” he says. “I’ve heard it’s a great growing district for melons, particularly over the winter months. The supplies down south dry-up over that period because it is a little bit too cold down here so we would like to get some from up north.”  Josh says finding the perfect type of melon is a critical part of the beer making process. “A good brewing watermelon is one that has a lot of juice and is nice and fresh,” he says.
