More than 500 people visted Aquaponics WA in Perth, Australia Sept.10 to take part in the store’s Open Day. “We are thrilled about how the day went,” says Erica Roberts, administration manager of Aquaponics WA. “The car park, front and back, was packed, as was the shop.” One of the goals of Open Day was to show off the hydroponic and aquaponic display garden. Feeding time was a particularly big hit thanks to the seven gigantic barramundi. Each time one of the gargantuan fish ate a food pellet, it was accompanied by a splash that made people jump away in surprise. The event also featured a number of practical demonstrations. These included fine-tuning a hydroponic system, how to extract lavender essential oil, how to propagate plants at home, how to test a growing system, and setting up an aquaponics system. Industry suppliers, including Canna Australia, Dome, Nutrifield, Stealth Garden Supplies, and Aquatec Equipment, were on-hand as well. They came armed with giveaways and samples, and plenty of product knowledge. The roving MC, Gertrude WellEase, hustled the crowds around so everyone could take in all of the talks and demonstrations, which were eagerly absorbed by keen growers. The day also included some fun for the whole family. There was face painting for the kids, cooking demos, show bags, and more than 400 frankfurts cooked up by family friends. Overall, the Aquaponics WA Open Day was a big success. In fact, many of the visitors have returned since then to take their first steps into growing in water. The seeds have been definitely sown to make the Open Day an annual event, says Roberts.
