AUS: Potential to Develop Hydroponic Farming on Niue

The Agriculture Ministry in Niue says there is potential to further develop hydroponic farming on the island in order to reduce the country’s heavy dependence on imported produce. James Douglas, who runs Niue Fresh, one of two hydroponic farms, says the soil on Niue is terrible. “It probably averages about an inch and a half. The amount of soil that we have—top soil—is not really conducive to good planting, so I decided it will be easier to do it the hydroponics way. We get all our nutrients from New Zealand. They get sent up on a six-month supply that carries us through. We’re about to build quite a big greenhouse, and if things go right for us, we might have a look at maybe exporting a little bit if we can,” says James. (Source: rnzi.com)
