AUS: Hydroponic Greenhouse Fills Nutrition Gap

A women’s group in Katherine is planning on building a large-scale community garden for growing fresh produce right in the centre of the Northern Territory town. The Katherine Women’s Organic Association plans to grow the produce in a hydroponic greenhouse, with the support of the not-for-profit organisation, Food Ladder. The project has backing from the local council and pre-approval for government funding. Kelly McJannett, director and co-founder of Food Ladder, says the greenhouse will focus on growing crops that are hard to find in the region, like leafy greens and strawberries. “We really want to be working with communities all around the Top End. We look forward to improving access to nutrition and making meaningful jobs for people,” she adds. If the Katherine model proves successful, Kelly says Food Ladder will look at starting similar greenhouses in communities across the Northern Territory. (Source: abc.net.au)
